Mother-to-Mother: Creating A Peer Mentor Program for Mothers in Homelessness

Mothers with children represent a growing segment of the homeless population. The American Psychological Association (APA) responded to the problem by initiating a task force in 2009 calling psychologists to step forward and enhance the treatment and services available for this population. However, providing treatment is often a challenge for this population because of the power differential and other barriers that negatively impact the potential relationship between mental health providers and the person living in homelessness (Hoffman & Coffey, 2008). The use of a peer mentor to mitigate the risk factors for a specific population has been an effective intervention used by multiple support and advocacy groups (e.g. NAMI, AA). Building on research supporting the effectiveness of a peer-mentoring model, this study explored the impact of a mentoring program on the self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-perception of overall functioning for mothers experiencing homelessness. Using a repeated measures ANOVA design, this study compared the effectiveness of two mentoring approaches. One group of mentors were trained to incorporate a structured, brief intervention model (5A’s) into the meetings with their mentees versus a group of mentors using an unstructured approach for mentee meetings. Results showed that a four-session peer mentoring program significantly improved perceived overall functioning for both groups of mentees. However, the study did not find a statistical differences between the structured versus unstructured groups. Discussion and implications for future studies are included

Armstrong on Probabilistic Laws of Nature

    D. M. Armstrong famously claims that deterministic laws of nature are contingent relations between universals and that his account can also be straightforwardly extended to irreducibly probabilistic laws of nature. For the most part, philosophers have neglected to scrutinize Armstrong’s account of probabilistic laws. This is surprising precisely because his own claims about probabilistic laws make it unclear just what he takes them to be. We offer three interpretations of what Armstrong-style probabilistic laws are, and argue that all three interpretations are incompatible either with some feature of Armstrong’s broader metaphysics or with essential features of his account of laws (or both)

A total life prediction model for stress concentration sites

Fatigue crack growth tests were performed on center crack panels and radial crack hole samples. The data were reduced and correlated with the elastic parameter K taking into account finite width and corner crack corrections. The anomalous behavior normally associated with short cracks was not observed. Total life estimates for notches were made by coupling an initiation life estimate with a propagation life estimate

Global Properties of Locally Spatially Homogeneous Cosmological Models with Matter

The existence and nature of singularities in locally spatially homogeneous solutions of the Einstein equations coupled to various phenomenological matter models is investigated. It is shown that, under certain reasonable assumptions on the matter, there are no singularities in an expanding phase of the evolution and that unless the spacetime is empty a contracting phase always ends in a singularity where at least one scalar invariant of the curvature diverges uniformly. The class of matter models treated includes perfect fluids, mixtures of non-interacting perfect fluids and collisionless matter.Comment: 18 pages, MPA-AR-94-

The rich frequency spectrum of the triple-mode variable AC And

Fourier analysis of the light curve of AC And from the HATNet database reveals the rich frequency structure of this object. Above 30 components are found down to the amplitude of 3 mmag. Several of these frequencies are not the linear combinations of the three basic components. We detect period increase in all three components that may lend support to the Pop I classification of this variable.Comment: Poster presented at IAU Symposium 301, "Precision Asteroseismology - Celebration of the Scientific Opus of Wojtek Dziembowski", 19-23 August 2013, Wroclaw, Polan
